Elderberry Syrup – best homemade superpower

Elderberry syrup. The hype is everywhere with these little natural superstars. Some of the benefits of these gems are boosting the immune system, helping to support the immune system when combatting illnesses, and boosting the support of the respiratory and digestive systems, just to name a few. They are packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants and other immune-boosting minerals.

Did you know that in a study found here, that people ingesting elderberry syrup after being testing positive for influenza A and B, reported to have lessening of symptoms an average of four days sooner than those in the study group receiving a placebo? Or in this study where the benefits to the respiratory system through using elderberry syrup are discussed as a safer, alternative therapy to antibiotic use.

There are a couple of hiccups, though. You don’t just go to the grocery store to pick some up in the produce section. There are only a few online places to grab them in dried or frozen form. Otherwise you need to search out the bushes in your own neck of the woods. And, two, in raw or unripe form, the berries can carry the potential for severe digestive upset. (Read: diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, even numbness and disorientation). So … in order to use this wonderful source of support for our bodies, you need to harvest (or purchase them), and prepare them correctly and safely. The end.

How do we do that you ask? Well, after much reading, investigating and a little trial and error, I have a wonderful recipe I would love to share with you. This recipe is adaptable in a couple of ways, and honestly, I just think it is super yummy. And believe it or not – my kids love it too! No more fighting them everyday!
