Needing a little natural sunburn relief is inevitable
Summer. Sunshine. Swimming. Lots of time outside. Sunburn….
We try to be diligent with the sunscreen, but when we get caught without sunscreen or maybe forget to reapply often enough, our skin can suffer. Sunburn is painful and often leaves us looking for relief. When that happens we use this natural sunburn relief spray with just 4 simple ingredients.
Summer adventures mean lots of outdoor time
This past week we took the grands camping on our annual trip to super fun campground that’s a lot like summer camp. Activities for the kids, swimming, fishing, ice cream…. This year was a little different with social distancing measures in place, but they did a great job of making it amazing and safe for everyone. However we did get a little lax with the sunscreen. Grand #1 had so much fun fishing and riding bikes that we missed an application or two and he ended up with pink cheeks and ears (sunburned ears are not fun…) We applied the spray (for faces it’s better to spray into your hand and then apply so it’s more controlled) a couple times and when he woke up the next morning we were good to go.
And then, even after intending to be SUPER careful, we missed the back on #2’s neck when we went hiking. He has his shirt on backwards (a common occurrence) so he had a little V-shaped burn when we got home. Sigh. Natural sunburn relief to the rescue again.
Why did we choose these 4 ingredients?
It’s important to be aware of sun exposure, and use a combination of sunscreen, coverings like hats or sun guards as well as watching your time in the sun. Sunburns are damaging to skin. Exposure to ultraviolet rays produces free radicals in your body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that steal electrons from your healthier molecules to stabilize themselves. We use antioxidants to counter the free radicals. Many foods are high in antioxidants, they are in various supplements but topical application is the best way to protect your skin. It’s important to include ingredients in our natural sunburn relief that are high in antioxidants like apple cider vinegar and witch hazel.
We also use essential oils in our natural sunburn relief spray. High quality essential oils really amp up the soothing qualities of the spray and encourage your skin to heal quickly. While there are many different oils you can use to benefit the skin, we generally use lavender and peppermint. Lavender is incredibly soothing and gentle; it helps ease sunburn pain because of its antiseptic qualities.
Peppermint’s amazing cooling properties make it the perfect way to take the heat out of the burn. It contains a significant amount of menthol, giving it not only a cooling sensation but also eases and relaxes any muscle tension.
Can I make substitutions?
To make our natural sunburn relief spray, you will need a 4oz spray bottle, apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, lavender and peppermint essential oils – that’s it! If you want to jazz things up, you can add aloe gel, vitamin E or use other oils like tea tree, chamomile, or frankincense, but these 4 ingredients have served us well.
We’ve even blended in a little bit of fresh aloe at times and that addition feels extra cooling when it comes out of the fridge and onto your skin.
Skin soothing salves are a great alternative (or addition) to sprays. Often we use the spray for immediate relief and will apply a salve later, after showering, for even more soothing. This Dandelion Salve is perfect.
