We’ll break down a few different recipes to showcase the easiest ways to clean those fruits and veggies once you bring them home from the store. There are so many easy and inexpensive ways to effectively clean your fruit and veggies. No need to spend money on those store-bought versions. And the best part is – there are a variety of options. So, if you don’t have one ingredient – just try a different recipe!

One of the easiest sprays to pull together is with a little white vinegar, water and lemon juice. Pull this recipe out when you want to make a spray, or when you are scrubbing down a ton of fruit. If you are making a spray bottle – use 1/4 cup of white vinegar and about 1-2 Tbsp of lemon juice, and fill the remainder of the bottle with water. Spray down your produce, let sit for a few minutes and then rinse with cold water. Because both lemon juice and vinegar are antimicrobial in nature, this helps to effectively clean your produce. Looking for a great spray bottle? Here’s a great option.

Clean lots of produce with this wash

Use this same recipe in your sink or large bowl for cleaning lots of produce. Fill the sink or bowl with cold water. Add 1/4 – 1 cup of vinegar to the water, and 15 drops lemon essential oils or squeeze, alternatively 1/2 a lemon into the water. I will squeeze the lemon and add the remaining rind into the water as well. Let fruit sit for 5-10 minutes. Remove and rinse – prep to have available to eat!

This same mixture works well for veggies, too. However, if you want to clean any small critters from veggies (from deep in the crevices of kale, broccoli or lettuce for example). Use 2 Tbsp of salt and 2 Tbsp of lemon juice dissolved in water to effectively clean all your veggies. A sink works well for this method. Let the veggies soak for a few minutes and rinse with cold water. Prep as normal for storage or eating! This recipe is not recommended for fragile fruit such as berries. Use the vinegar & lemon wash instead.

I love washing and prepping all my produce at once when I return from the store. This really helps our family enjoy and snack on these healthy options when we can pull them directly from the fridge to the table to share!

Cleaning hardy vegetables and fruits?

A final option to clean your produce is with a baking soda, lemon juice and water. This works well to cleanse hearty veggies and fruit, but again I would avoid using this option on delicate fruit. Use this option in a spray bottle: 1 cup water, 1 Tbsp lemon juice, 1 Tbsp baking soda, shake and spray. Or, use this recipe in a large bowl or sink just editing the amount of ingredients. Let produce sit either in the water mixture or after spraying for a few minutes. Rinse with cold water and enjoy!
